How Does Spot Fixing Work?
For our final season, it’s a change from the usual fantasy cricket league. In an attempt to embrace the modern game, you are invited to join the Dorchester Cricket Club Spot Fixing Challenge 2011. All you need to do is make some bold predictions about a number of scenarios that take place during each match, although the scenario of how long it takes Benno to lose his rag with their umpire is not included in case Steve is not available for every game. The closer your prediction is to the actual result, the more points you score.
The predictions you make for each of the six scenarios below remain the same for the entire season, so there is no opportunity to make ‘transfers’ and change your predictions from game to game.
The scenarios you need to predict are as follows:
1. Number of runs scored by Dorchester in each match
Simply predict the total number of runs Dorchester score in their innings. If your prediction is spot on, you score 20 points with your score decreasing by one point for each run your prediction is over or above the actual total. So, if we score 200, you would score 15 points if you have predicted 195 and two points if you have predicted 218.
2 Number of runs scored by our opening partnership
Again, simply predict the Dorchester opening partnership. This time, the number of points scored decreases by two for every run your prediction is over or above the actual total. If you’re spot on, it’s 20 points again.
3 Number of runs conceded by our opening bowlers
Predict the number of runs the Dorchester opening bowlers concede between them. Once again, the number of points scored decreases by two for every run your prediction is over or above the actual total with a maximum of 20 points for a correct prediction.
4 Number of opposition players wearing some form of headgear when the first ball of our innings is bowled
It doesn’t matter is it’s a baseball hat, a baggy green, a wide brimmed hat or a turban. 20 points if you’re spot on, 15 points if you’re one out, with the points decreasing to 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1.
5 Number of Dorchester supporters at each match
It’s as simple as it sounds and a supporter does not have to attend the entire game to be counted. The points scoring is the same as for the opposition headgear above.
6 Number of different types of cake at tea
Pieces of fruit don’t count and not even trifle or a biscuit bar. All you need to predict is the number of cake varieties at tea. The scoring is the same as for the previous two scenarios.
So email your predictions to goldenudder@dorchestercc.co.uk before the start of the season. It’s £3 to enter with 50% of the takings going to the club, £10 to the person who has the top weekly score and the remainder to the person who finishes top of the league.
